Buhari Preaches Selfless Leadership, Reaffirms Loyalty to APC

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigeria’s political leaders to embrace humility, transparency, and a citizen-first approach to governance, revealing that he left office with no personal material gain from his eight years in power.

Buhari made the remark on Monday when he hosted governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at his residence in Kaduna, emphasizing that true leadership is measured not by personal accumulation but by public service and impact.

“I left office with the same physical assets I had before becoming President,” Buhari told the Progressive Governors Forum, in a message aimed at encouraging modesty and integrity among public office holders.

The visit was confirmed in a statement by his former media aide, Garba Shehu, who quoted the ex-president as saying that “leaders must always prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal or partisan interests.”

While reflecting on his time in office, Buhari expressed satisfaction with the ongoing renovations to his Kaduna home, acknowledging the Tinubu administration for the improvements made inside the building. “Outwardly, the house looks the same, but the renovations have been significant,” he said.

Buhari’s meeting with the APC governors comes at a critical political moment, following the recent defection of former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). El-Rufai had claimed in a BBC Hausa interview that he left the APC with Buhari’s blessings.

However, the former president used the opportunity to clear the air, insisting he remains fully loyal to the APC and would never abandon the party that made his presidency possible.

“I am a proud APC member and I want to always be known as one. I will continue to do everything I can to promote and support the party,” Buhari stated, without directly addressing El-Rufai’s claims.

The elder statesman urged the APC governors to stay focused on policies and programs that directly improve the lives of the people, reminding them that public service is a privilege that must not be abused.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Buhari’s message appears to signal a subtle call for reflection and reorientation within the ruling party—anchored on discipline, modesty, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian people.
