CCC Demands Swift Government Action to Halt Benue Violence

The Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC) has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Benue State, particularly the recent killings in Yelewata and its surrounding communities.

In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by its Chairman, Major General Chris Olukolade (Rtd), the CCC condemned the senseless killings, destruction of farmlands, and mass displacement of residents, describing the situation as a grave threat not only to local peace and security but also to national stability and food security.

As reports of reprisal attacks and armed incursions continue to emerge, the Centre called on governments at all levels to take immediate and decisive action to restore law and order and protect vulnerable populations.

General Olukolade emphasized that restoring public trust is essential to effective crisis management, noting that government credibility must be earned through transparency, responsiveness, and responsible communication.

“Governments at all levels must secure the trust of their citizens,” he said. “This requires effective information management and a pragmatic, people-centered approach to resolving the crisis.”

He stressed that affected communities must not be left to live in fear or abandonment, urging authorities to combine strategic security deployment with meaningful community engagement and proactive conflict resolution efforts.

While some voices have called for a declaration of a state of emergency in Benue to contain the unrest, the CCC argued that what is most urgently needed is sustained, transparent, and accountable leadership.

“The people of Benue, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve protection, dignity, and a government they can trust,” Olukolade affirmed.

The Centre also called for restraint and collaboration among security agencies, traditional leaders, civil society groups, and the media to prevent further escalation of tensions. It warned against the spread of misinformation or inflammatory rhetoric, which could deepen divisions and fuel further violence.

Reaffirming its commitment to responsible communication and constructive dialogue, the CCC pledged its continued support for initiatives aimed at fostering peace, enhancing security, and promoting national unity.
