Former Kwara Governor, Chief Adebayo, Dies at 84
Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, a former Governor of Kwara State and former Minister of Communications and Transportation, has died at the age of 84.
According to a statement issued to PRNigeria by his family, the elder statesman passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
Born on February 24, 1941, Chief Adebayo was a distinguished Nigerian academic, politician, and public servant whose career spanned several decades and critical roles in national development.

He began his professional journey as a lecturer at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), before venturing into politics. He was elected as a Senator during Nigeria’s Second Republic and later served as Governor of Kwara State. From 2003 to 2007, he held the position of Minister of Communications and Transportation, where he played a key role in reforms within the sector.
Describing him as a man of integrity and dedication, the family noted that Chief Adebayo served the nation with honour and distinction throughout his public life.
Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Chief Adebayo’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics. He will be remembered for his principled leadership, intellectual depth, and unwavering commitment to national service.
