Anambra Police Arrest Two Over Fake Kidnap, N3m Ransom Scam
The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended two individuals over a self-staged kidnap incident designed to defraud the victim’s family of several million naira in ransom.
The suspects, identified as Chinecherem Nwaokoye, a 28-year-old female student of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), and her 30-year-old male accomplice, Chinecherem Aronu, were arrested at a lodge in the UNIZIK Temporary Site area of Awka, where they were found together.
According to a press release by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) launched a swift, intelligence-led operation following reports from the Nwaokoye family that their daughter had gone missing on July 8, 2025, while returning home from school.

A day later, a man posing as her kidnapper contacted the family, demanding ₦10 million in ransom. After negotiation, ₦3 million was agreed upon, with ₦1 million paid into the victim’s own bank account.
Investigations revealed that the alleged abduction was a ruse. During police interrogation, the female suspect confessed to masterminding the fake kidnapping scheme after watching a movie. She admitted that the plot was aimed at raising capital for her boyfriend to start a business.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered that the suspects be prosecuted without delay. He described the incident as a troubling reflection of moral decay among young people and urged parents and guardians to monitor the behavior and associations of their children more closely.
“The Command will not tolerate such acts of deception and criminal manipulation. We must all work together to restore discipline and integrity in our society,” the CP said.
The Police Command also thanked the public for their support and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and justice across Anambra State.
