UNIMAID Mass Comm becomes Faculty of Communication and Media Studies
The Senate of the University of Maiduguri has approved the establishment of Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCMS) as part of its efforts to unbundle, restructure and expand the scope of existing academic programmes beyond mass communication.
The approval of the new faculty was granted during the 319th Regular Meeting of the Senate held on 31st July, 2025 at Muhammadu Buhari Senate Chamber. The Senate was presided by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele.
The newly approved Faculty has seven (7) departments which includes Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Department of Broadcasting, Department of Public Relations, Department of Advertising, Department of Development Studies as well as rebranded Department of Mass Communication.
The new faculty will soon commence operation with three (3) departments that is Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Department of Broadcasting, and rebranded Department of Mass Communication.

According to Dr. Abdulmutallib A. Abubakar who is the current Head of Department of Mass Communication, the remaining departments will start in the Second Phase of the faculty’s strategic development plan.
Dr. Abubakar who provided the required leadership that led to the establishment of the faculty, said this development expanded the department of mass communication, which was established in 1983, in order to meet the increasing demand for specialization and professionalism in communication and media studies, accommodate the dynamics of technological changes around the world, increase the skills and employability of graduands as well as adhere to the global, regional and national requirements of agencies like National Universities Commission (NUC).
Dr. Abubakar commended the Senate of the university, the vice-chancellor, Management of the university as well as other senior colleagues for ensuring that the new faculty became a reality. He added that they would everything possible to ensure that the faculty becomes a centre of academic excellence, skills and professionalism.
