Finnish Court Jails Simon Ekpa Six Years for Terrorism, Tax Fraud
A Finnish court has sentenced Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, to six years in prison after finding him guilty of terrorism-related offences and tax fraud.
The ruling, delivered by the Päijät-Häme District Court, declared Ekpa guilty on multiple counts, including incitement to commit a public crime with terrorist intent, participation in the activities of a terrorist group, aggravated tax fraud, and violations of the Attorneys Act.

According to the court, Ekpa promoted the secessionist cause of Biafra in southeastern Nigeria through unlawful means between August 2021 and November 2024. He was accused of exploiting social media platforms to gain political influence while actively supporting groups designated as terrorist organisations.
Investigators revealed that under his leadership, the movement established armed groups which were equipped with weapons, explosives, and ammunition sourced through his international contacts.
“Ekpa urged and enticed his followers on his X account to commit crimes in Nigeria,” the court stated in its judgment.
The case represents one of Finland’s most high-profile convictions for terrorism-related activities tied to Nigeria. Ekpa’s sentencing is expected to have far-reaching implications for cross-border security cooperation and the monitoring of extremist propaganda disseminated online.
