PSC, Police Move to Recruit 30,000 Policemen, Inaugurate Joint Committee

The Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have jointly inaugurated a high-powered Ad-hoc Committee to immediately commence the recruitment of 30,000 new police personnel, in line with a presidential directive aimed at strengthening national security.

The committee was formally inaugurated on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, by the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), at the PSC Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the numerical strength of the police and enhance operational efficiency across the country.

Representing the PSC Chairman, DIG (Bar) Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), fdc—who also chairs the Nigeria Police Force Matters Committee—described the collaboration between the PSC and NPF as essential to achieving a transparent, seamless, and merit-driven recruitment exercise. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to upholding fairness and adhering strictly to established recruitment guidelines.

The Inspector-General of Police was represented by CP Edwin Eloho of the Department of Training and Development, Force Headquarters. Eloho emphasized the strategic importance of recruiting fresh personnel to boost the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in fulfilling its mandate of protecting lives and property. He assured the PSC of the NPF’s full cooperation to ensure a smooth and timely recruitment process.

The Joint Ad-hoc Committee is expected to harmonize processes, develop frameworks, and ensure the recruitment exercise is conducted with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

The inauguration marks a significant step toward addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, improving the police-to-citizen ratio, and reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening internal security.

The Police Service Commission is constitutionally empowered to appoint, promote, discipline, and dismiss personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, except the Inspector-General of Police. The Nigeria Police Force remains the country’s principal law enforcement agency, mandated to prevent and detect crime, protect lives and property, and maintain public order.
