Christmas Message: COAS Shaibu Salutes Troops, Vows Stronger, Combat-Ready Army in 2026

As Nigerians join Christians across the globe to celebrate Christmas and prepare for the New Year, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, adaptability and combat readiness in the defence of the nation.

In a Christmas and New Year goodwill message to officers, soldiers, civilian staff and their families, Shaibu described the yuletide season as a period of reflection, renewal of faith and thanksgiving, stressing that the core values of Christmas—love, sacrifice, compassion, peace and unity—are deeply rooted in the ethos and traditions of the Nigerian Army.

The army chief noted that the outgoing year witnessed both significant challenges and remarkable achievements across various theatres of operation, as troops continued to confront complex and evolving security threats nationwide.

According to him, Nigerian Army personnel have consistently demonstrated resilience, discipline and professionalism in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

“The Nigerian Army has continued to display exceptional professionalism in all theatres of operation in the defence of our fatherland,” Shaibu said, attributing the successes recorded to divine guidance and the dedication, courage and commitment of officers and soldiers.

He paid special tribute to troops currently deployed in operational areas, many of whom, he noted, would be unable to celebrate the festive season with their families due to the exigencies of duty. Shaibu described their absence from home as a profound sacrifice that reflects their selfless service and loyalty to the nation.

The COAS assured personnel that his leadership would remain focused on strengthening professionalism, enhancing combat readiness and ensuring effective administration. He added that increased attention would continue to be given to troop welfare, recognition of excellence and the enforcement of a transparent reward and sanction system.

Shaibu explained that these initiatives align with his command philosophy of further transforming the Nigerian Army into a highly motivated and capable force able to decisively operate within joint and multi-agency environments.

Beyond the battlefield, the army chief acknowledged the critical role played by the families of officers and soldiers, describing them as the “unseen strength” behind the successes recorded by the service. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving welfare programmes aimed at supporting military families.

The COAS also underscored the importance of collaboration and synergy, commending sister services, security and intelligence agencies, relevant ministries and departments, state governors, traditional rulers and host communities for their continued support.

He noted that such cooperation remains vital to sustaining peace and security across the country.

Looking ahead to 2026, Shaibu expressed optimism, pledging that the Nigerian Army would intensify efforts to address emerging security threats, consolidate operational gains, strengthen intelligence gathering and analysis, and further boost morale and welfare of personnel.

He urged officers and soldiers to remain disciplined, vigilant and security-conscious throughout the festive season, while upholding the highest standards of conduct at all times.

Shaibu also honoured fallen heroes, noting that their gallantry and ultimate sacrifice have contributed immensely to national security. He assured that the Nigerian Army would continue to support their families and preserve their legacy.

The COAS expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Army. He cited improved funding for critical operations, enhanced training infrastructure, acquisition of modern equipment, strengthened welfare initiatives and increased recruitment quotas as key outcomes of the president’s commitment to national security.

According to him, these interventions have significantly improved the operational readiness and morale of the Nigerian Army.

As the festive season unfolds, Shaibu wished officers, soldiers, civilian staff and their families a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, expressing confidence that the Nigerian Army would enter 2026 more united, disciplined and resolute in service to the nation.
