Troops, Police Secure Maiduguri After Boko Haram Suicide Attack at Market Mosque

Troops, Police Secure Maiduguri After Boko Haram Suicide Attack at Market Mosque

 

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies, have secured Maiduguri metropolis following a Boko Haram suicide attack at a mosque within Gamboru Market in the Borno State capital.

 

The explosion occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, while Muslim worshippers were observing evening prayers at the busy market mosque in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC).

 

In a statement issued by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation Hadin Kai, the military said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was carried out by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians at the scene.

 

The statement, signed by the Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, disclosed that a total of 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries from the blast. It added that two of the injured victims later died at the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition. The remaining casualties are said to be stable and receiving medical treatment.

“Troops, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, other sister security agencies, the Borno State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), responded promptly, secured, and cordoned off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety,” the statement said.

 

It further noted that victims were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.

 

Following the incident, security agencies have intensified surveillance and patrols across Maiduguri and surrounding areas to forestall further attacks, particularly during the yuletide season.

 

The military urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, advising members of the public to avoid crowded places and exercise extra caution at religious centres. Citizens were also encouraged to report any suspicious persons or movements to the nearest security post.

 

Operation Hadin Kai commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in the attack and reassured the public of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the North-East region.
