Senator Buba Commissions 40 Solar Boreholes to Tackle Water Shortage in Bauchi South
In a major move to eradicate decades of water scarcity, the Senator representing Bauchi South, Senator Shehu Umar Buba, has commissioned 40 solar-powered boreholes across the seven local government areas (LGAs) of his district.
The project, part of the lawmaker’s constituency intervention program, targets both rural and semi-urban communities that have long struggled with the lack of potable water. The strategically distributed boreholes are located in Alkaleri, Kirfi, Bauchi, Toro, Dass, Bogoro, and Tafawa Balewa.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Senator Buba—who currently chairs the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry—revealed that the project was born out of direct engagement with the grassroots. During his electioneering campaign, he visited 72 out of the 75 wards in the district, where the cry for clean water was the most consistent plea from residents.
“Everywhere we went, people complained about the lack of potable water,” the Senator recalled. “I promised them that if elected, I would do something about it. Today, we are fulfilling that promise. Access to clean water is a basic necessity and the foundation for healthy, productive communities.”
Senator Buba further disclosed that while these 40 units were executed as constituency projects, he has personally funded the construction, rehabilitation, and repair of several additional boreholes across Bauchi State to broaden the impact.

The Senator emphasized that the choice of solar-powered technology was deliberate to ensure sustainability in off-grid rural areas. By eliminating the need for expensive fuel or an unreliable national grid, the communities can maintain the facilities at a minimal cost.
The distribution of the 40 boreholes was based on population density and local need: Bauchi LGA has 15 boreholes, Toro LGA: 7 boreholes, Alkaleri, Kirfi, & Tafawa Balewa 4 boreholes each while Dass & Bogoro got 3 boreholes each.
The intervention has brought immediate relief to thousands of residents. Alhaji Aminu Muhammad Danmaliki, the Danmalikin Bauchi, described the project as a turning point for the district.
“In many areas, residents rose before dawn to trek long distances in search of water that was often unsafe for drinking or cooking,” he said. “This will significantly improve the quality of life.”
Echoing this sentiment, Malam Aminu Ado, a resident of the Tirwun community, shared the hardship of years spent without a single drop of water from a tap until this intervention. Other residents noted that the availability of clean water would drastically reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases and boost local small businesses that rely on water supply.
The former Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence reaffirmed that his developmental agenda remains holistic. Beyond water, Senator Buba noted that his office is actively working on upgrading rural clinics and providing medical supplies, Renovating schools and providing instructional materials as well as expanding energy access to stimulate local economies.
The commissioning event was attended by community leaders, traditional rulers, and jubilant constituents who praised the lawmaker for prioritizing essential services that directly impact the common man.
