
Nigeria, South Africa Navies Seal Strategic Maritime Partnership
The Nigerian Navy and the South African Navy have concluded their maiden Naval Staff Talks to formalise a strategic maritime partnership aimed at strengthening security cooperation and safeguarding shared interests across African waters.
The high-level engagement, held from April 12 to 18, 2026, at Naval Base Simon’s Town, marks a significant milestone in bilateral defence relations between both countries. It established a structured framework for sustained naval collaboration between two of Africa’s leading maritime forces.
The Nigerian delegation led by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral A.A. Mustapha, while Rear Admiral S. Makhanya headed the South African team.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Navy, the talks were convened as part of a strategic initiative endorsed by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and his South African counterpart, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, to deepen bilateral ties and enhance maritime security cooperation.

Deliberations during the talks focused on critical areas of mutual interest, including maritime domain awareness, joint training, operational coordination, and capacity development. The outcomes are expected to bolster collective responses to maritime threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, and transnational organised crime across African waters.
As part of the programme, the Nigerian delegation undertook strategic visits to the Institute of Maritime Technology and the South African Naval Museum, gaining insights into South Africa’s maritime innovation ecosystem, research capabilities, and naval heritage.
In a further demonstration of the growing partnership, the South African Navy is expected to participate in the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary celebrations scheduled for June 2026, providing an additional platform to consolidate agreements reached and explore new avenues of cooperation.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that enhance maritime security, promote regional stability, and support economic prosperity across the continent.
