PeacePro Confers First-Ever Honour on Omoyele Sowore, Names Him “Guardian of Civil Liberties”
The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has conferred its first-ever individual recognition on activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, naming him “Guardian of Civil Liberties” in acknowledgement of his sustained advocacy for justice and human rights.
The organisation described the recognition as historic, marking the formal launch of its institutional framework for honouring individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to nonviolence, accountability, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
In a statement, PeacePro’s Executive Director, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, said the designation reflects Sowore’s consistent frontline engagement in defending citizens’ rights, particularly in cases involving unlawful detention, due process violations, and abuse of power.

“This is not a routine honour. It is PeacePro’s first, and it sets a clear standard. ‘Guardian of Civil Liberties’ recognises sustained courage in defending rights and holding power accountable,” Hamzat stated.
He explained that the initiative is part of the organisation’s broader objective of promoting a culture where civic courage is recognised and where the protection of human dignity is central to peacebuilding efforts.
According to him, while the honour does not carry any legal implication, it represents a moral and institutional endorsement of advocacy that aligns with democratic values and the rule of law.
PeacePro also used the occasion to call on governments and public institutions to uphold constitutional freedoms, ensure due process, and strengthen accountability mechanisms.
“Peace cannot thrive in an environment where justice is uncertain,” the statement emphasised.
The recognition of Sowore, a long-standing voice in Nigeria’s civic and pro-democracy space, signals PeacePro’s intention to spotlight individuals whose actions contribute to strengthening democratic governance and human rights protections.
