Troops Foil IPOB/ESN Attack in Enugu, Recover Explosives, Nab Suspect
Troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, working alongside other security agencies, have foiled an attack by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intelligence-led operation in Imezi Owa community, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The operation, conducted on May 6, 2026, was reportedly aimed at tracking suspected collaborators of the outlawed group within the community.
According to the military, troops advancing on foot into the area came under heavy attack from gunmen operating from a building suspected to be a terrorist hideout. Three security personnel sustained injuries during the encounter.
Despite the assault, the troops maintained control of the situation, repelled the attackers and secured the area, while the injured personnel were evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment.
The military disclosed that during the exchange of gunfire, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly stockpiled inside the building detonated, sparking a fire that destroyed the structure.

Further exploitation of the area led to the recovery of additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades and a shrine reportedly used for ritual activities by the suspects. Security operatives subsequently dismantled and destroyed the shrine to prevent its continued use for criminal purposes.
One suspected collaborator was arrested during the operation, while recovered items and the suspect were handed over to the Nigerian Police, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Headquarters Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, reassured residents of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the region.
The military urged law-abiding residents of Imezi Owa and neighbouring communities to remain calm, avoid harbouring criminal elements and continue cooperating with security agencies.
The task force also warned members and sympathisers of the proscribed IPOB/ESN groups to desist from illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.
“Security forces remain resolute in their determination to build peace in the region and will continue to dismantle criminal networks and deny terrorists freedom of action,” the statement added.
The statement was signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army.
