Police Arrest Suspected Job Scammer in Kano, Recover 29 Stolen Phones
The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters, Kano, has arrested a 32-year-old suspect, identified as Richard Peter, in connection with an alleged fake ushering job scam that targeted students of Bayero University Kano.
Police authorities said 29 stolen mobile phones and other valuables were recovered from the suspect following an intelligence-led operation.
The arrest followed a petition submitted on May 12, 2026, by a group of students led by Clementina Paul to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, alleging that the suspect defrauded them under the guise of offering ushering jobs.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly acted through one Faith Dauda to invite 38 female students to Mairabo Hotel in Sabon Gari area of Kano on May 10, 2026.
Upon arrival at the hotel, the victims were reportedly asked to change into work attire and leave behind their mobile phones and other personal belongings, after being told that phones would not be allowed at the supposed event venue.
The suspect subsequently took the students to the hotel restaurant, ordered food valued at N6,000 per person, and disappeared without settling the bill.
