The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has adopted Senator Shehu Buba Umar as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections in Bauchi State, with the lawmaker pledging sweeping reforms including the implementation of an ₦80,000 minimum wage for public servants, improved security, youth empowerment and economic revitalisation.
Senator Buba made the pledge while delivering his acceptance speech after emerging as the party’s consensus candidate for the governorship race.
The senator, who currently represents Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, described his emergence as a solemn responsibility and a covenant with the people of Bauchi State across the 20 local government areas.
“Today, I stand before you not merely as a candidate, but as a son of this soil, a servant of this people, and a man who has listened to the cry of Bauchi and refuses to look away,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to the PRP leadership and delegates for the confidence reposed in him, describing the party as a movement rooted in justice, equity and the dignity of ordinary Nigerians.
Senator Buba also extended a hand of reconciliation to other aspirants, urging party members to remain united ahead of the governorship contest.
“To those who supported other aspirants, I extend my hand to you. This party is one. This state is one. And from this moment forward, we march together,” he stated.
Highlighting his record in public service, the senator pointed to his tenure as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, where he said he contributed to shaping Nigeria’s security architecture, as well as his leadership of the Senate Committee on Animal Husbandry which deepened his understanding of farmer-herder conflicts affecting parts of Bauchi State.
He also outlined several constituency interventions carried out during his time in the Senate, including the distribution of food items, motorcycles and cash grants to grassroots stakeholders and farmers, educational support for students through payment of WAEC, NECO and JAMB fees, scholarships, computer training programmes, and relief assistance for flood victims in affected communities.
Senator Buba further highlighted legislative efforts such as sponsorship of the Cybercrime Act Amendment Bill, the Federal Medical Centre Amendment Bill and advocacy for the establishment of a Customs Training School in Bauchi State.
