MAAUN Clarifies Status of Former Visiting Lecturer, Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Sexual Harassment
The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has clarified that Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe, who has been mentioned in recent social media reports, is no longer affiliated with the institution, stating that his one-year appointment as a Visiting Lecturer expired in May 2026 and was not renewed.
In a statement issued on Friday, the university said the clarification became necessary following reports linking the former lecturer to MAAUN.
According to the management, Dr. Gwadabe served as a Visiting Lecturer under a one-year contract, which ended in May 2026. It explained that appointments of visiting lecturers are subject to periodic review and renewal based on performance, institutional needs and management approval.
The university noted that Dr. Gwadabe’s contract was not renewed after its expiration, adding that several other visiting lecturers also concluded their appointments during the same period.
MAAUN reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment, stressing that it operates a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, abuse and exploitation.

The management disclosed that the university’s Founder had instituted a ₦5 million reward for any female student who reports and provides credible evidence of sexual harassment or assault involving any lecturer or staff member through the institution’s established reporting channels.
The university also dismissed what it described as inaccurate claims circulating online in relation to the matter.
It stated that reports alleging a student was delayed for two years were false, explaining that MAAUN only recently graduated its first set of students, making such claims inconsistent with the institution’s academic timeline.
Similarly, the management refuted claims that a postgraduate student was among the alleged victims, noting that the university has not yet commenced postgraduate programmes.
“It is therefore factually impossible for any postgraduate student to have been involved as alleged,” the statement said.
The university urged media organisations and members of the public to report the matter accurately and refrain from describing Dr. Gwadabe as a current member of its academic staff, since his appointment ended in May 2026.
MAAUN reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of integrity, transparency, accountability and academic excellence, while pledging to continue enforcing policies that protect the rights and welfare of students and staff.
