Customs Seizes 112 Tyres, 680 Cartons of Cosmetics on Eastern Waterways
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Eastern Marine Command, has intercepted 112 pneumatic tyres and 680 cartons of smuggled cosmetics along the Oron/Ibaka–Cameroon waterways.
The seizures were made during an intelligence-led operation aimed at disrupting smuggling activities and preventing unregulated goods from entering the Nigerian market.
The Acting Comptroller of the Eastern Marine Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs (DC) Esien Etim Esiet, said the operation was part of the Command’s sustained efforts to protect public safety, enforce import regulations and safeguard legitimate businesses from the impact of illicit trade.
Esiet said the 112 pneumatic tyres were found to be unsafe and substandard, with some improperly stored, posing potential risks to motorists and other road users.
According to him, the condition of the tyres could lead to tyre failure, blowouts and potentially fatal road crashes.

He added that the 680 cartons of cosmetics were intercepted over issues relating to improper documentation and the absence of required safety certification, while some of the products were suspected to contain banned or toxic substances.
“Whether it is substandard vehicle tyres that threaten lives on our highways or unverified cosmetic chemicals that endanger public health, we will continue to disrupt these illegal supply chains and bring perpetrators to justice,” Esiet said.
The Acting Area Controller said the interception also highlighted the importance of protecting legitimate businesses and local manufacturers from unfair competition created by smuggled goods that enter the country without the payment of appropriate duties or compliance with regulatory requirements.
He commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for providing logistics and operational equipment that had enhanced the Command’s capacity to sustain anti-smuggling operations across the Eastern waterways.
Esiet also praised officers of the Command for their vigilance, professionalism and commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime borders.
He said the latest interception demonstrated the NCS’s resolve to prevent illicit and potentially harmful products from reaching consumers while strengthening public safety, protecting government revenue and promoting fair competition for businesses operating within the law.
