Army Activates 28 Armoured Brigade in Kebbi, Deploys Tank Battalion, Artillery Regiment
The Nigerian Army has formally operationalised the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, alongside the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje, as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and protect vulnerable communities across Kebbi State.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, who authorised the activation, was represented at the ceremony by the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Maj. Gen. Bemgba Paul Koughna.
Koughna said the establishment of the formations was in line with the Nigerian Army’s efforts to optimise its force structure, expand its operational footprint, strengthen command and control, and improve response time to security threats across the North-West.
He charged the Acting Commander of 28 Brigade, Col. Abdullahi Umar, to deploy the newly established formation to provide essential fire-support capabilities and enhance the effectiveness of ongoing operations within the Division’s area of responsibility.

The GOC said the formation would also strengthen security efforts in Kebbi State, particularly in countering threats posed by bandits and other criminal elements.
He stressed that the attainment of lasting peace required discipline, tactical focus and effective collaboration among security agencies and other stakeholders.
Koughna further urged the troops to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and strictly observe the Rules of Engagement while carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.
He directed the personnel to prioritise the protection of law-abiding citizens and ensure that their operations remained focused on restoring and maintaining peace in affected communities.
The GOC also commiserated with residents of Jandutse community following the recent killing of a resident in a bandit attack.
He assured the community of increased military presence to enhance the protection of residents and prevent further attacks.
The residents, in response, expressed appreciation to the GOC for what they described as his sustained efforts to improve security in Kebbi State.
The activation of the 28 Armoured Brigade, 281 Tank Battalion and 381 Artillery Regiment is expected to strengthen the Army’s operational capacity and provide additional combat and fire-support capabilities for ongoing security operations across the state.
