MAAUN Founder Gwarzo Donates $100,000 To Uganda Islamic University, Recognized for His Philanthropic Efforts
In a significant display of commitment to advancing education in Africa, Prof. Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, the President of the MAAUN Group of Universities, has generously donated $100,000 to the Islamic University in Uganda. The announcement of this substantial contribution came during his address as the special guest of honor at the university’s 33rd convocation ceremony, held at its main campus in Mbale.
At the ceremony, the university honored Prof. Gwarzo with an award of excellence in recognition of his dedicated service and transformative contributions toward the institution’s development. Professor Gwarzo’s efforts in enhancing educational opportunities have not gone unnoticed, as highlighted by the Council Chairman of the Islamic University, H.E. Prof. Dr. Muhammad A.S.E.A. Altabtabaei from Kuwait. During the award presentation, Altabtabaei praised Gwarzo’s relentless dedication and expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the university’s council.
“I was informed by the university management of your numerous contributions, and on behalf of the council, I wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to you,” Altabtabaei stated.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Gwarzo reflected on the honor bestowed upon him and reiterated his commitment to uplifting educational standards. “I am truly humbled to receive this recognition, and I am eager to contribute further to the growth of this esteemed institution,” he remarked before making the announcement of his $100,000 donation to the university.
The Rector of the Islamic University in Uganda, Prof. Dr. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, also expressed his gratitude for the generous donation, which he described as a momentous contribution. “This donation is a monumental gesture. On behalf of the students and staff of the Islamic University in Uganda, we extend our sincere thanks and pray to Allah SWT to bless your wealth,” he said. Gyagenda also acknowledged Gwarzo’s reputation as a philanthropist who consistently keeps his promises.
Prof. Gwarzo, who is not only the founder of Maryam Abacha American University of Niger and Franco-British International University Kaduna but also the Canadian University of Nigeria in Abuja, led a 17-member delegation from Nigeria to the convocation. The Islamic University, established in 1988, serves as the second university in Uganda, further enhancing the educational landscape in the region.
As a distinguished linguistics scholar specializing in French, Prof. Gwarzo is also recognized as a respected entrepreneur and philanthropist, making significant strides in the field of education both in Nigeria and beyond. His contributions have garnered him numerous accolades, including the recent title of EDUPRENEUR OF THE YEAR bestowed by the International Academic and Management Association (IAMA) in India.
Through his generous donation and unwavering support, Prof. Gwarzo continues to inspire the next generation of scholars and underscores the transformative power of education in fostering growth and development across Africa.
