PRNigeria Fellowship Experience & Impact

The recently concluded 2024 PR Nigeria Young Communication Fellowship was a groundbreaking initiative, pioneering the training of young journalists and equipping them with essential skills to not only survive but thrive in the ever-evolving 21st-century media landscape.

The Fellowship, held across three states—FCT Abuja, Kano, and Kwara—provided invaluable opportunities for budding journalists. Through workshops, lectures with industry leaders, media excursions, and field visits to leading organizations, participants received a well-rounded introduction to the complexities and nuances of media practice. This four-week intensive program covered Strategic Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Fact-Checking, Social Media, and the application of Artificial Intelligence in Journalism. Additionally, it facilitated opportunities for fellows to join professional bodies like the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) or the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

I was privileged to be selected for the inaugural fellowship at the PR Nigeria Headquarters in Abuja. It was a transformative experience that offered firsthand exposure to the intricate processes of media practice. Throughout the program, trailblazers in journalism meticulously educated us on the importance of professionalism, fact-based reporting, and ethical practices—critical elements in fostering trust and credibility in the profession.

Tackling Challenges in Modern Journalism

A standout moment for me was the session with Mr. Chris Isiguzo, President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ). He passionately emphasized the need to combat fake news perpetuated by untrained individuals posing as journalists. He urged young practitioners to rise to the challenge by leveraging their passion and talent to deliver ethical, fact-based reporting. “Journalists must uphold the highest ethical standards and remain impartial while discharging their duties,” he said, a principle that has become central to my work.

The Fellowship also focused on future-ready skills, preparing us for the digital age. Sessions like Social Media and Modern Journalism with Mr. Kabir Abdulsalam taught us how to use digital platforms effectively to shape narratives and engage audiences. Digital Journalism and Public Relations, facilitated by Alhaji Yushau Shuaib, offered insights into leveraging emerging technologies to enhance journalistic practice. These lessons have given me a competitive edge in navigating the rapidly changing media landscape.

The Fellowship has had a profound impact on my professional and personal growth. The skills and knowledge I gained have enhanced my digital and media capabilities, enabling me to approach my work with newfound confidence and expertise. This foundation has been pivotal in my journey, leading to my recognition as a Finalist and Winner of the Features Writer category at the 2024 Campus Journalism Awards for my article “Climate Change and Insecurity in Northern Nigeria.”

The success stories of my fellow participants further underscore the program’s impact. From Lilian Omolu’s thought-provoking blog posts that empower young Nigerians, to Fatima Ibrahim’s advocacy for inclusivity for people living with disabilities, and Sekinat Musa’s dedication to ethical journalism, each fellow has emerged with renewed vigor and purpose. Together, we represent a cohort poised to make meaningful contributions to journalism and public relations in Nigeria.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments

My sincere gratitude goes to the entire management team of Image Merchant Promotions Limited (IMPR) for creating this groundbreaking platform for youth journalists. Special thanks to Alhaji Yushau Shuaib, whose visionary leadership made the fellowship possible; Mr. Muhammad Dahiru Lawal, Head of Innovation and Special Projects, who played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the program; and Mr. Zekeri Laruba Idakwo, whose dedication ensured the program ran seamlessly. I also extend my appreciation to other key figures like Mr. Abdulsalam Mahmud, Deputy Editor, Mr. Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, Managing Editor, and Mr. Kabir Abdulsalam for their invaluable contributions.

A Blueprint for the Future

The PR Nigeria Young Communication Fellowship is more than just a training program; it is a testament to PR Nigeria’s commitment to youth development as a catalyst for national growth and prosperity. At a time when national identity and patriotism are waning among Nigeria’s youth, initiatives like this provide an inclusive platform to empower young professionals and encourage them to shape the national discourse.

This Fellowship serves as a blueprint for future programs aimed at fostering youth empowerment and development. It underscores the importance of ethical communication, collaboration, and the pursuit of innovative solutions to Nigeria’s challenges. As a participant and beneficiary, I am confident that the lessons learned will enable me and my peers to contribute meaningfully to the progress and development of our country.
