Where Dreams Meet Opportunity: My Time as a PRNigeria Fellow
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” Lao Tzu once said. My journey toward redefining my professional and personal aspirations began with a step to Kano—the vibrant heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. This step led me to the PRNigeria Fellowship, an unparalleled opportunity to deepen my expertise, broaden my horizons, and transform my dream of becoming a professional journalist into reality.
The PRNigeria Fellowship became my North Star, guiding me toward a deeper understanding of journalism, communication, storytelling, and the art of reporting underreported issues.
Arriving in Kano: A City of Tradition and Progress
As I arrived in Kano, the city greeted me with its vibrant pulse, a harmonious blend of historical heritage and modern ambition. Beyond its rich history, Kano’s infrastructure stood as a testament to progress and resilience, embodying the spirit of its people.
Amid the bustling city and the crisp Harmattan air, my heart carried echoes of home, especially thoughts of my little Ashrof, barely six months old. Despite the distance and the challenges, I remained unwavering in my commitment, never missing a session or an opportunity to engage. Every day reminded me of the purpose that brought me here: to become a great and influential journalist.
An Immersive Learning Experience
The PRNigeria Fellowship offered an intensive curriculum, immersing me in the nuances of development journalism, solutions journalism, and multimedia storytelling. The sessions, led by seasoned professionals, transformed complex theories into practical, actionable insights.
Among the many modules, multimedia journalism became my standout achievement, allowing me to capture moments that told compelling stories. One memorable highlight was taking a professional portrait of Hadiza and others—a testament to the power of visual storytelling.

A Visit to Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria
One of the program’s highlights was our visit to Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria. Walking through the campus was nothing short of awe-inspiring. This visit reinforced my belief in the transformative power of education and its role in shaping communities and driving progress.
A Transformative Journey
The PRNigeria Fellowship has been a transformative journey that equipped me with skills extending beyond journalism. I’ve learned to approach challenges with a solutions-driven mindset, embrace the power of storytelling, and leverage multimedia tools to amplify voices.
More importantly, the program taught me the value of continuous learning and adaptability. This principle has not only shaped my professional development but also enriched my personal growth.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on my time as a PRNigeria Fellow, I am struck by the profound impact it has had on my life. The knowledge and experiences I’ve gained are not just theoretical but deeply practical, enabling me to excel as a political scientist and an aspiring journalist. The Fellowship has been more than a program—it has been a catalyst for change, pushing me to dream bigger and achieve more.
In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” The PRNigeria Fellowship has reignited my passion for continuous learning and self-improvement.
This journey, which began with a single step, is far from over. With every stride, I carry the lessons, memories, and friendships that have defined this remarkable chapter of my life. I am not just a journalist; I am a storyteller, a visionary, and above all, a lifelong learner.
