Lagos Lawmakers Seek DSS Protection Amid Fears of Impeached Speaker’s Return

Contrary to media reports that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly to seal the offices of the Speaker and his deputy, it has now been revealed that the Assembly itself invited security agencies to bolster safety measures.

Security sources told PRNigeria that the move comes in response to credible intelligence indicating a potential security threat linked to the planned forceful reinstatement of the impeached Speaker of the State Assembly.

In a letter dated February 14, 2025, the Assembly management alerted security agencies in Lagos about the alleged plot, which is reportedly set to unfold on February 18, 2025.

The letter, bearing reference number LSHA/FAD/0/7554/323, was signed by the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. A. T. B. Ottun. Addressed to the DSS Director in Lagos State, as well as other heads of security agencies, the correspondence highlighted the urgency of the situation.

Titled “URGENT: ENHANCED SECURITY MEASURES FOR LSHA PREMISES,” the letter stated: “I wish to bring to your attention a pressing matter that requires immediate action. The impeached Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume office on the 18th of February, 2025, as the Speaker, posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members.”

The Acting Clerk further requested enhanced security measures, including increased personnel presence and strict access control within and around the Assembly premises, effective from Sunday, February 16, 2025.

“In light of this situation, we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises… till further notice,” the letter concluded.

The development underscores the heightened tensions within the Lagos State House of Assembly following the impeachment of its former Speaker. The Assembly management has emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent any disruption to legislative activities and ensure the safety of its members and staff.

Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement regarding the measures being implemented in response to the Assembly’s request. However, sources indicate that additional personnel have already been deployed to the Assembly complex to maintain order.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders and residents await further updates, with many hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing political impasse.
