Nigeria’s Security Forces Face Rising IED Threat – NCTC Coordinator

The National Coordinator for the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Major General Adamu Garba Laka, has warned that the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) remains one of the gravest threats to Nigeria’s security personnel and national stability.

Speaking at the “Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Symposium” in Abuja on Wednesday, Laka highlighted the devastating impact of IEDs on both military operations and civilian infrastructure.

“Their impact extends beyond the frontlines to civilian populations, critical infrastructure such as power transmission lines, and national stability,” he said.

The NCTC Coordinator noted that the growing ease of fabricating IEDs using commercially available materials has made them a persistent and evolving challenge for security forces.

The symposium, organized in collaboration with the British High Commission and the United States Embassy, aims to develop a national strategy to counter the threat effectively.

Gen. Laka emphasized the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts through collaboration, intelligence-sharing, and capacity-building.

He called on security agencies to examine existing gaps and improve coordination to prevent, detect, and respond to IED incidents more efficiently.

With the increasing use of IEDs by terrorist groups, the symposium is expected to foster discussions on innovative countermeasures and enhance Nigeria’s preparedness against the growing threat.
