PCNGI Announces Key Milestones Ahead of Democracy Day
The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has announced a series of milestone events leading up to Democracy Day on May 29.
The initiative, which has been at the forefront of expanding the domestic use of gas for industrialization and public mobility, is rolling out a comprehensive plan to accelerate the adoption of CNG nationwide.
“The past year has been transformative for PCNGI,” said Kenechukwu Chukwu, Technical Assistant on Stakeholder Management and Public Engagement for the initiative.
“We are committed to delivering a rapid transition of Nigeria’s transportation sector to CNG, ensuring affordability, accessibility, and sustainability.”
According to the statements, “The initiative has outlined several major milestones, starting with a $6 million investment in the Arete Mini-LNG Project, scheduled for signing on April 4. This investment is aimed at expanding CNG access to northern Nigeria.
“On April 7, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will receive a briefing on PCNGI’s progress, highlighting the administration’s commitment to the CNG revolution. By April 11, a groundbreaking agreement is expected to be signed between PCNGI and public sector unions, paving the way for CNG conversions for 200,000 public sector employees.

“Furthering its impact, PCNGI will launch the first phase of a tricycle deployment program on April 15 in partnership with the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NACTOMORAS) and the Federal Ministry of Youths.
“Between April 25 and May 29, PCNGI will commission several last-mile CNG refueling stations in key states including Enugu, FCT, Lokoja, Port Harcourt, Ado Ekiti, and Abia.”
According to Chukwu, these stations will significantly enhance intra-state transport between major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano.
“Expanding the nationwide CNG footprint is critical to ensuring Nigerians can move efficiently and affordably,” he stated.
“The initiative is also prioritizing public service and security agencies. The week of May 5 will see the handover of CNG-powered buses to the Nigerian Army, followed by a ‘Train the Trainer’ program in mid-May to equip technicians in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police with CNG conversion skills.
“PCNGI’s efforts will culminate in key programs on Democracy Day, including the launch of a Basic Awareness Training program for auto technicians and artisans, and the rollout of Phase 1 of the University CNG Infrastructure Program in partnership with MDGIF and the Federal Ministry of Education.”
“Initiatives like these demonstrate our unwavering commitment to building a robust and sustainable CNG ecosystem in Nigeria,” Chukwu emphasized. “We invite stakeholders to follow these programs closely and participate in this transformative journey.”
