Nigeria, Pakistan Collaborate in Military Forces Training, Border Security

Nigeria and Pakistan are strengthening military ties with renewed commitments to joint Special Forces training, intelligence sharing, and border security initiatives.

This development followed the visit of Pakistan’s Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Shahir Shamsad Mirza, to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

A statement issued by , Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, on Thursday noted that the meeting focused on “strategic collaboration between the two countries in the areas of training, particularly Special Forces Training, management of veteran affairs, border security, and intelligence sharing, among others.”

General Musa, while receiving the Pakistani defence chief, expressed appreciation for the visit and emphasized the importance of strategic military collaboration between both countries.

“We will continue to build capacity in collaboration with the Pakistani Armed Forces,” Musa said, highlighting the ongoing training relationship that has seen over 2,000 Nigerian officers trained in Pakistani military institutions.

He stressed that areas such as Special Forces training, veterans’ affairs, border security, and intelligence sharing are key focus points in Nigeria’s evolving defence strategy.

General Mirza, in his remarks, praised the Nigerian military’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and insecurity.

He described Nigeria as a “giant leader in Africa” with geostrategic importance to Pakistan.

“We share a lot in common — culturally, religiously, and in our security challenges. Pakistan values this relationship and looks forward to a more robust partnership with Nigeria, including in defence manufacturing,” he said.

The Pakistani military chief also expressed interest in deeper cooperation with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), indicating Pakistan’s willingness to support local defence production effort.

Gusau added that the visit is expected to pave the way for increased defence diplomacy and joint operations between the two countries in tackling transnational threats.
