Information Minister Urges Media Literacy to Combat Fake News

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on public officers to prioritise media and information literacy as a crucial defence against fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

Speaking at the second Spokespersons Summit in Abuja, organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in collaboration with the Ministry, Idris emphasised that in a media-driven world where virtually everyone serves as a spokesperson, the ability to critically assess and interpret information is essential.

“Due to the lack of media literacy, public officials and the general public have become increasingly vulnerable to fake news and biased narratives,” he warned.

The Minister revealed plans to establish the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute in collaboration with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), describing it as a global first. He noted that discussions with senior UNESCO officials in Paris had advanced preparations for the institute’s launch.

Highlighting reforms, Idris announced the formal recognition of Public Relations as a standalone cadre in the Federal Civil Service effective December 2023—an achievement he attributed in part to NIPR’s advocacy efforts. The re-designation aims to professionalise public communication roles and improve information dissemination in government.

He also reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to free speech and responsible creative expression, pledging continued support for a dynamic and economically viable media sector.

Commending NIPR President Dr. Ike Neliaku, the Minister praised the introduction of the Information Ministerial Clinic at this year’s summit. The clinic featured former Information Ministers—Prof. Jerry Gana, Chief John Nwodo, Frank Nweke Jr., Labaran Maku, and Lai Mohammed—who shared insights on navigating complex national communication challenges during their tenures.

The summit brought together spokespersons, media professionals, and public relations practitioners to enhance strategic communication and promote ethical information management.
