MUSWEN Commends Tinubu, Decries Marginalisation of Yoruba Muslims in Federal Appointments

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for notable achievements in his first two years in office, particularly in the areas of economic reform, infrastructure, and security. However, the umbrella body for Yoruba Muslims has expressed concern over what it described as the continued marginalisation of Muslims from the South West in federal appointments.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, and jointly signed by its President, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, and Executive Secretary/CEO, Prof. Muslih Tayo Yahya, MUSWEN commended President Tinubu for his commitment to national development amid significant challenges.

“Over the past two years, the administration has made notable strides in various sectors, including economic reforms, infrastructural development, and efforts to address national security challenges,” the group noted, urging the president to stay the course in his reform agenda.

Despite this commendation, MUSWEN said it was “deeply concerned” about the exclusion of South West Muslims from key political and administrative positions in the Federal Government.

“The South West region, a critical hub of intellectual, economic, and cultural significance, is home to a vibrant Muslim community that has consistently contributed to the nation’s progress,” the statement read. “Regrettably, the representation of South West Muslims in key federal positions does not reflect the region’s demographic and intellectual weight.”

Citing Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which calls for fair and equitable representation in government, MUSWEN urged President Tinubu to redress the imbalance, particularly in light of recent revelations indicating that nearly 70 per cent of federal appointments had gone to Christian appointees.

“The unsaid fact contained in this is that Muslims in Southern Nigeria have been practically shut out of consideration for appointments, big or small,” the group lamented.

While acknowledging recent efforts by the administration to correct regional disparities, MUSWEN called on President Tinubu to engage directly with stakeholders from the South West Muslim community to ensure fair representation in ministries, departments, agencies, and other federal parastatals.

“Inclusive governance is pivotal to fostering unity, trust, and a sense of belonging among all Nigerians, irrespective of region or religion,” it stressed.

MUSWEN reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and progress, pledging continued support for the Tinubu administration’s efforts to tackle insecurity, reduce corruption, and stabilise the economy.

“May Allah (SWT) guide President Tinubu and grant him the wisdom to lead Nigeria to greater heights,” the statement concluded.
