CP Adewale Warns Police Officers Against Illegal Detention, Extortion in FCT Command

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, has issued a stern warning to police officers across the Command, directing them to desist from illegal detention, interference in civil disputes, particularly land matters, and all forms of extortion.

According to statement signed by SP Josephine Adeh, Anipr, Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT, the directive follows a surge in complaints regarding the unlawful detention of suspects for bailable offences, extortion from both complainants and suspects, and police involvement in matters that fall outside their legal mandate. CP Adewale condemned these practices, describing them as violations of the Constitution and contrary to standing orders from the Inspector-General of Police.

To address these concerns, the CP has instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs) to immediately review detention records and ensure the prompt release of suspects held for minor or bailable offences—provided proper documentation and surety verification are completed.

He further emphasized that bail remains free, warning that any officer found demanding money for bail or related documentation would face strict disciplinary measures.

The Police Commissioner also reiterated that officers must refrain from meddling in civil matters, especially land-related disputes, which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the police. He warned that any officer caught violating this directive—and any superior who fails to enforce it—would be held accountable.

CP Adewale condemned the practice of demanding payments before investigations are initiated, stressing that such actions constitute extortion and abuse of office, and those found guilty will be prosecuted.

In addition, the public has been cautioned against offering bribes to police officers, as doing so constitutes a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Residents have also been advised against using police officers as tools for personal vendettas or debt recovery.

The CP urged all residents of the FCT to support the Command’s ongoing efforts to ensure professionalism, respect for human rights, and accountability within the police force. Complaints of police misconduct can be reported to the Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) via 08107314192.
