Russia vows support for Iran amid US aggression

Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran, declaring them unjustified and pledging Moscow’s support for the Iranian people.

Putin made the statement during a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, in Moscow on Monday—just two days after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered coordinated military strikes on Iran’s three major nuclear facilities.

“The unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification,” Putin said in remarks broadcast on Russian television. “We are making efforts to support the Iranian people, and I’m pleased you are in Moscow today so we can discuss these urgent matters and work together to find a way forward.”

Araqchi, in response, said Iran’s retaliatory actions were carried out in legitimate self-defence. He expressed gratitude for Russia’s condemnation of the U.S. offensive and conveyed best wishes from Iran’s Supreme Leader and President.

“Russia is today on the right side of history and international law,” Araqchi stated.

While Moscow has offered diplomatic backing, it remains unclear what specific measures Russia may take in support of Tehran. The strategic cooperation treaty signed by both countries in January notably lacks a mutual defence clause.

Ahead of the U.S. assault, the Kremlin had warned that any American military intervention could destabilize the region and lead to dire consequences.

Speaking on possible Russian assistance to Iran, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “It all depends on what Iran needs,” adding that Russia’s offer to mediate the crisis is, in itself, a significant gesture of support.

Peskov strongly condemned the U.S. airstrikes, warning of escalating regional tensions. “An increase in the number of participants in this conflict is happening—or rather, has happened. We are seeing a new spiral of escalation in the region, which we deeply regret and strongly condemn,” he said.

He also raised concerns about the status of Iran’s nuclear facilities and the potential risk of radiation leaks following the attacks.

Peskov further disclosed that President Trump did not inform Putin in advance about the strikes. “There was no detailed information shared. While Iran has been a recurring topic in recent conversations between the two leaders, there was no direct briefing or prior notice about this operation,” he noted.

Russia has reiterated its readiness to play a mediating role in resolving the crisis and preventing further escalation in the Middle East.
