Nigerian Military Denies Bello Turji Surrender, Says Fugitive Still Wanted
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports suggesting that notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji has surrendered to security forces, clarifying that the wanted criminal remains at large and is still being actively hunted.
Major General Markus Kangye, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this clear during Thursday’s press briefing in Abuja.
He described the surrender claims, which had gained traction online as “unverified and misleading,” urging citizens to disregard them and refrain from spreading misinformation.
“Bello Turji has not surrendered, and our troops remain actively on his trail, the reports circulating lack credibility and do not reflect the reality on the ground,” Major General Kangye said.
Turji, widely feared for orchestrating attacks and kidnappings across Zamfara and Sokoto states, had reportedly surrendered some weapons and freed 32 kidnapees under a purported peace deal mediated by Islamic clerics. However, Kangye emphasized that no such deal has been recognized by the Federation, and no official confirmation exists.

He also addressed separate human rights concerns, refuting recent allegations by Amnesty International that military operations in the South-East included extrajudicial killings.
The DHQ spokesperson dismissed these allegations as unfounded and emphasized that the Armed Forces strictly adhere to rules of engagement and international humanitarian principles.
“Accusations of extrajudicial killings are serious but must be supported with credible evidence. The military remains committed to lawful conduct,” Kangye stated.
In addition, Kangye addressed rising tensions among some retired military personnel who had staged a protest over unresolved welfare issues.
He clarified that only a small number were involved and assured that the Military Pensions Board, the Defence Headquarters’ Chief of Accounts and Budget, and the Minister of Finance have all engaged with the veterans to resolve their concerns.
“This matter is being addressed, and mechanisms are in place to ensure veterans receive due attention,” he said.
Major General Kangye urged the public to continue their support for the Armed Forces and cautioned against amplifying unchecked social media reports that could jeopardize ongoing security efforts.
