Nigeria Courts Diaspora, California Partners to Boost Green Investments

Nigeria is stepping up efforts to attract green and sustainable investments by leveraging its diaspora network and forging closer ties with partners from California, USA.

At a high-level engagement in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, said the Federal Government is committed to creating a business-friendly environment to draw both domestic and foreign investors.

Oduwole told the visiting California–Africa Climate and Economic Delegation that ongoing regulatory and legislative reforms are designed to open critical sectors of the economy to global partnerships. She stressed that sustaining investor confidence remains a key priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“We are working to ensure that Nigeria remains open, ready, and competitive for international investment,” the minister said.

Also speaking, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the increasing role of Nigerians abroad in driving development at home.

“Our diaspora is contributing not just financial capital, but expertise and global influence,” she said, adding that these resources are vital for long-term national growth.

The California delegation was led by Dr. Toks Omishakin, Secretary of the California State Transportation Agency. He commended NiDCOM for hosting the talks and noted that California leads the United States in clean and sustainable transportation, accounting for 14 percent of the national electric vehicle market.

Discussions at the meeting focused on sustainable transportation, clean energy collaboration, technical cooperation, and infrastructure development. California’s strengths in technology and venture capital were highlighted as tools to help African green enterprises compete globally.

The engagement ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepen partnerships, harness diaspora expertise, and expand sustainable investment flows into Nigeria.

The meeting was convened by NiDCOM, according to a statement signed by Gabriel Odu of the commission’s Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit.
