Soldier, Wife Found Dead at Wawa Cantonment as Army Orders Investigation
The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femli, and his wife, who were both found dead in their apartment at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, on Saturday, 11 October 2025.
According to a statement by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the tragic incident occurred at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the cantonment, leaving residents in shock and disbelief.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier, who was on duty within the barracks, had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before the discovery of the bodies. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, prompting an immediate probe by military authorities.

“The remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has since commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement said.
The Army expressed deep regret over the unfortunate development and extended its condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased. It also assured that the outcome of the ongoing investigation would be made public upon conclusion.
“The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assures the general public that the circumstances that led to the sad incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the outcome relayed accordingly,” Nwankwo added.
The Army appealed for public understanding and cooperation as it works to unravel the facts and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
