PSC Reinstates Dismissed Police Officers After Reviewing Disciplinary Cases

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reinstated several police officers previously sanctioned, following a comprehensive review of disciplinary cases aimed at ensuring fairness and justice within the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement on Sunday, the PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, said the commission deliberated on 24 appeals and one pending disciplinary matter during its recent plenary session.

According to Ani, the decisions underscore the commission’s commitment to equity in handling disciplinary issues involving police personnel.

Among those reinstated is ACP Grace Obiageli Ejiofor, who was compulsorily retired after an incident on September 8, 2023, at the Old Netim Division in Akamkpa, Cross River State. Her reinstatement takes effect from the date of her initial retirement, with full restoration of rank and placement in line with her contemporaries.

Ani further disclosed that the commission lifted the severe reprimand imposed on ACP Muhammad Awwal Yunusa, restored the rank and position of CSP Allwell Ihekandu Okwuonu, and approved reinstatements for SP Clement Awoyemi, ASP Bamiselu Oluwaseun, ASP Ahmed Monday, and ASP Imoohi Doora.

The commission also dismissed petitions against Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Bzigu Dali, describing allegations of falsified records as baseless. It nullified a warning letter not issued by the PSC and reversed the unauthorized change of his date of birth from April 10, 1967, to April 10, 1966.

PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd), reaffirmed the commission’s resolve to handle disciplinary cases promptly to prevent injustice and career stagnation among officers.

“The Commission will ensure that pending disciplinary matters are treated without delay. Officers cleared of wrongdoing will not have their career progression impeded, while those found culpable will face appropriate sanctions,” Argungu stated.

During the opening of its second plenary meeting on Thursday, the commission also approved several promotions, including the appointment of a new Deputy Inspector-General of Police and the promotion of one Commissioner of Police to Assistant Inspector-General.

Others promoted include SP Omenihu Obinna, Commander, Anti-Cult Unit, Abia State Command; DSP Bankole Olajide Joseph, Commander, Bank Guard, Lagos State Command; and several officers confirmed as Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP)—notably Ede Stella Ukamaka of the Police Hospital, Awka; Omeife Bethrand Emeka of 45 PMF, Force Headquarters, Abuja; and Nnamdi Nwoba, Officer-in-Charge of Surveillance, Ubakala Division, Abia State.

ASP Adeyemi Adeola, Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, was also promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

The latest reinstatements and promotions, Ani added, are part of the PSC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen trust in its disciplinary and administrative processes, ensuring that officers are treated fairly and in accordance with due process.

Over the years, several officers have petitioned the PSC over alleged wrongful sanctions and arbitrary disciplinary actions, prompting reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability in police oversight.
