Customs, Operation HADIN KAI Deepen Collaboration on Border Security Across North-East
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration with the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) to enhance border security management in Borno and Yobe States.
The Customs Area Controller in charge of Borno and Yobe States, Controller Abdullahi Mohammed Idris, made the pledge during a courtesy visit to the OPHK Headquarters in Maiduguri on Thursday.
Speaking during the visit, Controller Idris said the engagement was aimed at consolidating the existing relationship between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly in addressing border security challenges in the North-East.
He disclosed that the Service had deployed Geo-Partial Surveillance Technology across Nigeria’s land and sea borders as part of ongoing efforts to improve monitoring and rapid response capabilities.
According to him, collaboration with Operation HADIN KAI remains critical in tackling cross-border crimes and enhancing effective border management in Borno and Yobe States.
“The purpose of this visit is to strengthen synergy and seek the continued guidance and support of OPHK as a key security stakeholder in the region,” Idris said.

The Area Controller also acknowledged the role of the Nigerian Army in the establishment of the Nigeria Customs Service Staff College and in supporting the capacity building of Customs personnel nationwide.
He expressed appreciation to the Theatre Commander and his team for the reception accorded his delegation, noting that sustained collaboration would further enhance operational efficiency and border security.
In his response, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its vital role in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and curbing illicit activities.
He emphasised that national security requires a multi-agency approach, stressing that no single security agency can independently address the complex threats facing the country.
“Porous borders remain a significant challenge, contributing to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons that undermine security in border communities,” the Theatre Commander said, adding that the role of the Customs Service is crucial in addressing these threats.
Major General Abubakar also praised Customs personnel deployed within Operation HADIN KAI for their professionalism and contributions to the mandate of the Joint Task Force, reaffirming the military’s commitment to sustained cooperation with the Service.
The visit concluded with the signing of the visitors’ register and exchange of souvenirs between both institutions.
