POLL: Only 1 in 3 Americans Support Trump’s Strikes on Iran — Lowest Public Backing for US Military Action in Modern History
Multiple surveys show 44–45% of Americans oppose the attacks; 74% say Trump needed Congressional approval he never sought; only 3 in 10 trust his military judgment
Major polls conducted in the immediate aftermath of the United States and Israeli strikes on Iran have delivered a damning verdict on President Donald Trump’s decision to launch the attacks: only one in three Americans support the military action, making it the least popular debut of a US military campaign in living memory — trailing even the deeply controversial 2003 invasion of Iraq.
PRNigeria reports that a YouGov snap poll fielded on February 28, 2026 — the same day the strikes were launched — found just 34% of Americans approve of the US attacks on Iran, with 44% disapproving and 22% undecided. A parallel YouGov survey placed approval marginally lower still, at 33%, with 45% opposed. The numbers represent a historic low for initial public backing of American military force abroad.
Before the Strikes: Opposition Was Even Stronger
The hostility to military action against Iran predates the strikes themselves. A University of Maryland Critical Issues Poll conducted between February 5 and 9 found that only 21% of Americans favoured the United States initiating an attack on Iran, while 49% were firmly opposed and 30% said they did not know. Support was highest among Republicans at 40%, but collapsed to just 6% among Democrats and 21% among independents.
An earlier Economist/YouGov poll conducted between January 30 and February 2 showed the public leaning against military action by a margin of 48% to 28% — a 20-point gap that reflects longstanding American war-weariness.
The Partisan Divide: Deep, But Republicans Are Not Fully United
The YouGov snap poll reveals the sharpest partisan split seen in any major US military campaign. Only 69% of Republicans backed the strikes — a figure that would have been considered catastrophically low in any previous Republican administration — against just 10% of Democrats. Independents remain in negative territory.
Historically, the contrast is stark. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, 96% of Republicans and 90% of Democrats approved of the invasion of Afghanistan — a near-total national consensus. When the United States invaded Iraq in March 2003, 93% of Republicans and 59% of Democrats were in favour. The Iran strikes have achieved nothing close to either threshold, even within Trump’s own base.
74% Say Trump Needed Congressional Approval — He Did Not Seek It
Perhaps the most politically explosive finding comes from a Newsweek survey showing that 74% of Americans — nearly three in four — believe Trump was constitutionally required to obtain Congressional approval before striking Iran, while only 26% say no such approval was necessary. Trump did not seek authorisation from Congress, a decision that has triggered immediate scrutiny from constitutional scholars and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
Trust in Trump’s Military Judgment — Critically Low
An AP-NORC poll conducted between February 19 and 23 — days before the strikes — found that while 80% of American adults express at least moderate concern about Iran’s nuclear programme posing a direct threat to the United States, a decisive 56% do not trust Trump to make the right decisions on international military action.
More strikingly, only approximately 3 in 10 US adults say they have a great deal or quite a bit of trust in Trump’s judgment on the use of military force, his management of relationships with US adversaries, or his handling of nuclear options — the three domains most directly implicated in the Iran crisis.
A Generational Divide: Younger Americans Less Alarmed by Iran
Age plays a notable role in shaping American attitudes. While about 6 in 10 US adults overall describe Iran as an enemy of the United States, that figure drops to roughly half among adults under the age of 45 — compared to approximately 7 in 10 among those aged 45 and older. Younger Americans are also more likely to question military responses and to prioritise diplomatic solutions.
The Historical Verdict: A War Without a Public Mandate
PRNigeria reports that analysts and historians are already describing the Iran strikes as the first major US military campaign since at least the Vietnam era to begin without majority public support. The YouGov approval rating of 34% compares to 92% approval for Afghanistan in November 2001, 71% approval for Iraq in March 2003, and 76% for the 1991 Gulf War. No modern US military campaign has launched with such thin public backing.

The political implications are profound. With Trump facing potential legal challenges over the absence of Congressional authorisation, a deeply divided electorate, and a Republican base that is far from uniformly supportive, the Iran strikes — regardless of their military outcomes — have opened a domestic political front that could prove as consequential as the conflict itself.
