Police Council Approves Disu as Substantive IGP, Awaits Senate Screening
Following his endorsement by the National Police Council, Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, is now awaiting the formal transmission of his name to the Senate for screening and confirmation as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The Council’s approval marks a critical procedural step in cementing Disu’s leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, but his appointment will only be final after Senate confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.
Disu was appointed acting IGP on February 25, 2026, by Bola Tinubu following the resignation of former police chief, Kayode Egbetokun. The President had indicated that after securing the Police Council’s endorsement, the next step would be to forward Disu’s name to the Senate for legislative consideration.
With the Council’s confirmation now secured, attention shifts to the National Assembly, where lawmakers are expected to scrutinise his credentials, experience and vision for policing before granting final approval.
Disu, 59, formally assumed office as acting IGP last week at a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House in Abuja, shortly after being decorated by President Tinubu.

A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Disu also headed the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force and has held several operational and administrative positions since joining the Force in 1992.
Over the course of his career, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye, Ikare, Owo, Elimbu and Elelenwo, among other postings. He also commanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in multiple states and led anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers State.
At his handover ceremony, Disu pledged to prioritise professionalism, modernisation and accountability in policing.
“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” he said.
As the Senate prepares to receive his nomination, stakeholders within and outside the Force are closely watching the confirmation process, which will determine whether Disu transitions fully from acting to substantive Inspector-General at a time of heightened security challenges nationwide.
