Tinubu Swears in Disu as Substantive IG of Police
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday formally swore in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police at a ceremony held at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
Disu took the oath of office at 2:53 p.m. after his citation was read by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Abiodun Oladunjoye. The President had arrived at the venue at 2:48 p.m., with proceedings commencing shortly after the rendition of the National Anthem.
The ceremony was witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.
Disu’s confirmation as substantive IGP followed the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council earlier in the week.
The swearing-in was attended by key officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Tunji Olaopa; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also endorsed the appointment, citing his distinguished service record.
Disu’s confirmation comes less than a week after President Tinubu appointed him acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun on February 23, 2026.
Born on April 13, 1966, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He holds multiple academic and professional qualifications in public administration, criminology, forensic investigation, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.
Prior to his elevation, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.
At his decoration as acting IGP last week, President Tinubu charged him to improve discipline within the Force, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and restore public confidence in policing. In response, Disu pledged to enforce zero tolerance for corruption, human rights violations, and impunity within the Nigeria Police Force.
