Our Police Partnership Strengthens Public Trust and Promotes Transparent Governance in Kano — Comrade Waiya
The Kano State Government has attributed the growing public confidence in governance and improved information management in the state to its evolving partnership with the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with PRNigeria, noting that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has placed openness and accountability at the centre of its communication strategy.
According to Waiya, the state government has deliberately strengthened collaboration between the Ministry of Information and security agencies to ensure accurate public communication, especially during sensitive security situations.
“Our government’s communication strategy is built on transparency and keeping the people informed,” the commissioner said. “We are working closely with the police to promote a culture of openness and ensure that citizens have access to timely and reliable information.”
He explained that the collaboration enables swift responses to security-related issues and helps prevent the information gaps that often fuel misinformation, public panic or conflicting narratives.
Waiya also highlighted the role played by the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, whose proactive engagement with the public has strengthened the relationship between law enforcement and the community.

According to the commissioner, Kiyawa’s responsive communication style has helped humanise the police and build stronger trust between security agencies and residents.
“SP Kiyawa’s approach demonstrates the success of this partnership,” Waiya said. “His readiness to respond to public inquiries and address community concerns has greatly improved the image of the police and encouraged citizens to become active partners in maintaining security.”
Despite the progress, the commissioner acknowledged that coordinating communication among multiple government institutions and security agencies remains a challenging task.
He explained that the state is working to address issues such as maintaining consistent messaging across government departments, correcting conflicting narratives during crises, and managing coordination among diverse stakeholders within the security and governance framework.
“Managing these complexities is not easy, but we remain committed to improving our communication systems to serve the public better,” Waiya added.
The commissioner noted that the strengthened collaboration has already begun to change public perception of law enforcement in the state, with residents showing increased willingness to cooperate with security agencies.
He expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to evolve as the state explores new ways to deepen cooperation between government institutions, security agencies and the public.
“As we move forward, we will continue to strengthen this collaboration because Kano must always come first, and our communication strategy must reflect that commitment to excellence,” Waiya said.
