Tension in ISWAP Camp asTroops Eliminate Top Commander, Modu Kunduli
Fresh tension has reportedly gripped camps of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) following the killing of one of its top commanders, Modu Kunduli, by troops of Operation HADIN KAI during a failed assault on a military formation in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources said Kunduli was neutralised last week when insurgents attempted to attack an Army Forward Operating Base in Mayanti village, but were repelled by troops.
His death is believed to have triggered anxiety and internal uncertainty within ISWAP ranks, particularly among fighters operating in the Sambisa Forest, where the late commander was considered a key operational figure due to his familiarity with the terrain and his fluency in Fulfulde, Kanuri and Marghi languages.
According to security reports, Kunduli had been a prominent insurgent commander responsible for coordinating attacks across parts of Borno and Adamawa State for nearly a decade. His activities reportedly dated back to the period when the extremist group was under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau of Boko Haram. He later joined ISWAP following Shekau’s death in 2021.

The commander was widely accused of masterminding attacks and terrorising communities in Askira Uba Local Government Area, including Lassa, Multaku, Uvu, Wamdeo and Ruimirgo villages.
He was also linked to several assaults in Gwoza Local Government Area, particularly in communities such as Vita, Yamtage, Izge, Pulka, Warabe, Limankara and Ubawa.
Beyond Borno, Kunduli reportedly exercised operational control over Galta, a border community connecting Borno and Adamawa states. From there, he oversaw insurgent activities across parts of Madagali Local Government Area and Michika Local Government Area in Adamawa.
Security analysts believe his elimination represents a significant setback to ISWAP’s operational network in the North-East, potentially weakening the group’s command structure and its capacity to coordinate attacks across the region.
Meanwhile, troops of Operation HADIN KAI are continuing clearance operations and aggressive patrols in the area to prevent fleeing insurgents from regrouping.
Military sources assured residents that sustained offensives would continue until the remaining elements of the terrorist group are completely dismantled.
