Troops Repel Terrorist Ambush in Yobe, Destroy IED During Patrol in Borno
Troops of the Nigerian Army have neutralised several Boko Haram terrorists and repelled an ambush in Yobe State, while also discovering and safely disposing of an improvised explosive device (IED) during a separate operation in Borno State.
Security sources disclosed that the ambush occurred at about 5:23 p.m. on March 14 along the Longlari–Kanama road in Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State, when troops of the 159 Battalion, B Company, stationed in Kanama, were returning from a routine patrol.
According to the sources, suspected terrorists launched the ambush near Mairari village, attempting to attack the troops along the route. The soldiers swiftly reinforced their positions and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, neutralising several of the insurgents and forcing others to flee into nearby bushes.
Following the encounter, the troops carried out exploitation of the surrounding area in pursuit of the fleeing insurgents in a bid to track their movements and prevent further attacks.

In a separate development, troops also thwarted a potential attack in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State after discovering and safely destroying an improvised explosive device planted along a key supply route.
The operation, which took place at about 6:35 a.m. on March 14, was conducted by troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion Quick Reaction Force following intelligence reports indicating the movement of suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)/Boko Haram terrorists around the Deyawa general area.
The troops, supported by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters, embarked on a fighting patrol aimed at dominating the area and preventing possible terrorist activities.
During the patrol, the team discovered the IED planted along the Deyawa main supply route.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attached to the patrol subsequently neutralised and safely disposed of the device at the location, preventing potential harm to troops and civilians using the route.
Military sources said the operations form part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts to clear explosives, secure major supply corridors and deny insurgents freedom of movement across operational areas in the North-East.
They added that clearance and patrol operations are continuing in the affected areas to forestall further attacks and sustain security in the region.
