NAF Agusta Helicopters Boost Precision Airpower in Counter-Terrorism Operations
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has highlighted the operational effectiveness of its Agusta helicopter fleet, describing it as a critical force multiplier in ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations across multiple theatres.
According to the NAF, the Agusta platforms have continued to deliver agile and precision-responsive air support in the North East, North West, and North Central regions, undertaking a wide range of missions including armed reconnaissance, close air support, combat search-and-rescue, tactical troop insertion, and casualty evacuation.
The Service noted that since the induction of the AW109 Power series helicopters, its operational capacity has significantly improved, enabling faster, more accurate, and sustained responses against insurgent targets. The helicopters have also complemented fixed-wing aircraft operations, providing real-time support to ground troops in complex and high-risk environments.

NAF authorities stated that the versatility of the Agusta fleet has contributed to the success of several military offensives, including the destruction of terrorist logistics hubs, interception of gun trucks, and disruption of insurgent mobility corridors across various operational theatres.
Operational data released by the Air Force indicates a high tempo of activity, with more than 8,665 missions conducted in 9,928 sorties over a 15-month period. These operations accounted for over 15,915 flying hours across multiple theatres, with rotary-wing platforms such as the Agusta helicopters playing central roles in precision strikes, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, as well as tactical mobility and casualty evacuation.
The NAF emphasised that the fleet’s rapid-response capability continues to weaken insurgent combat effectiveness, enhance troop survivability, and strengthen public confidence in the military’s efforts to restore peace, security, and territorial integrity across the country.
