IGP Orders Immediate Nationwide Audit of Police Arms, Ammunition
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all Commissioners of Police across the country to immediately begin a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition under their control, in a move aimed at strengthening accountability and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The directive was announced during an emergency conference with senior police officers and members of the press at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the IGP, the nationwide audit is designed to ensure strict accountability for police weapons, identify operational gaps, and prevent the misuse of arms and ammunition. He added that the exercise will also enhance the overall readiness of the Force to respond to evolving security challenges.

Disu stressed that the audit goes beyond routine administrative procedures, describing it as a critical institutional measure to guarantee that all weapons entrusted to the Force are properly documented, securely managed, and effectively deployed in line with established operational standards and national security priorities.
He instructed Commissioners of Police to conduct the exercise with utmost transparency and professionalism, ensuring that detailed and accurate reports are submitted to the Force Headquarters within the stipulated timeframe.
Reaffirming his leadership’s commitment to reform, the IGP noted that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force as a more accountable, disciplined, and efficient institution. He emphasized that the reforms are anchored on principles of professionalism, transparency, and robust internal control systems.
The Nigeria Police Force also reassured the public that current reform measures are focused on improving service delivery and strengthening its capacity to address contemporary security threats effectively.
