Plateau: Army deploys 178 troops to bolster security operations in Mangu
The Nigerian Army has deployed 178 personnel from the 236 Tank Battalion to Headquarters Sector 8, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, amid heightened security concerns in the area.
The deployment, carried out at about 4:40 p.m. on September 25, 2026, is part of the Army’s recent restructuring aimed at strengthening operational capacity and improving security responses across its areas of responsibility.
The first batch of personnel comprised two groups of 89 troops each, led by the Commanding Officer of 236 Tank Battalion, Lt. Col. H.O. Obire.
The troops were received by the Commander, Sector 8 OPEP, upon arrival at the sector headquarters and subsequently commenced familiarisation with the area of responsibility and the sector’s operational mandate.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the deployment is expected to reinforce existing operations in Mangu and adjoining communities, which have witnessed a series of security incidents in recent weeks.
Several attacks, killings, destruction of livestock and reprisal incidents have reportedly occurred in parts of the area in September, heightening concerns over the safety of residents and their livelihoods.
The additional personnel are expected to strengthen troops’ presence in vulnerable locations, enhance response capabilities and support ongoing efforts to prevent further attacks.
The newly deployed troops are also expected to operate alongside other security and response agencies in the area to protect civilians, maintain law and order and address emerging security threats across communities within the sector’s area of responsibility.
