How FCT Police Tackled Insecurity in February- CP Bala Ciroma

It is important I constantly keep you, our strategic partners, abreast with the progress this Command is making in policing the Federal Capital Territory.

2. In recognition of the importance of community policing, the Command has made concerted effort to operate an open door policy that thrives on bringing the police closer to the people. This has not only helped in bridging the gap between the police and the community, it has also contributed immeasurably in the recent progress the Command has made in its fight against crime.

3. I am glad to state that, there is a growing bond of friendship between the Command and FCT residents. This is evident in the information constantly provided by residents, which has led to foiling of crime, arrest of suspects, and recovery of exhibit.

4. While appreciating FCT residents for partnering with the Command, I want to assure all communities in FCT that we will continue to review our policing strategy to nip crime in the bud and providing quality service delivery that will be channelled towards satisfying their yearnings for security.

5. Nonetheless, like Oliver Twist, I am calling on FCT residents to further deepen their partnership with the FCT Police Command by providing information about persons with questionable character and criminal hideouts in their respective communities. The only way we can enjoy a crime free society is when members of the public make their respective communities inaccessible to criminals by exposing them to the police. It is pertinent to note that indulging criminals in a community is akin to encouraging their nefarious activities; we must therefore join hands together to fight in FCT.

6. May I at this juncture express the Command’s profound gratitude to our indefatigable Inspector-General of Police, IGP Muhammed Abubakar Adamu NPM, mni and the Honourable Minister of FCT, Mallam Muhammed Musa Bello for providing the Command with moral and the necessary logistics support to effectively discharge our policing duties. I am also grateful to the media, who are our strategic partners, for lending us the necessary support we need to police FCT.

7. Finally, like I promised during the last press briefing, all persons nursing the thought of perpetrating any criminal act in FCT should note that FCT is a no go area. The Command will definitely fish them out and bring them to justice. In fulfilment of that commitment, I present to you some notable achievements recorded by this Command in the last couple of weeks, as highlighted below:

1. ARREST OF ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECTS
/ RECOVERY OF EXHIBITS

On 20th February, 2020 at about 1100hrs following a tip off police operatives arrested one Danjuma Mohammed Mustapha ‘m’ at Wuse Zone 4 while trying to change the casing of three phones that were reasonably suspected to have been stolen. The suspect confessed during interrogation that phones were robbed by one Kingsley Onovo ‘m’, who engaged him to sell them. The arrest of Kingsley Onovo ‘m’, who confessed to his involvement in armed robbery operations, also led to the recovery of one English pistol, an iPhone, a wrist watch and a red Lexus jeep with reg no. ABJ 491 AH; that were robbed by him and other members of his gang at gunpoint at Jahi. Police investigations also led to the arrest of one Magnus Onwukwe ‘m’, a major receiver of stolen property who works with the gang, one HP Laptop which was robbed by Kingsley Onovo was recovered from him. Effort is being intensified to arrest the fleeing members of the gang and recover some robbed cars in that were robbed by the gang.

Similarly, On 18th February, 2020 at about 0100 police operatives from Trademore Division while on patrol around Angwan boko arrested one Michael Obi ‘m’ 25 years old in possession of a locally fabricated pistol, which has been recovered as exhibit. Investigation is on-going.

Furthermore, following a discreet investigation detectives from the Command Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested four armed robbery suspects, who armed with firearms and other dangerous weapons stormed an apartment in Karshi on 19/12/2019 at about 2020hrs and robbed the occupant of his Kia Rio, Peugeot 307 cars and other valuables. The four suspects recently arrested in connection with the robbery incident are: Harrison Jatau Sani ‘m’ 35 years, Usman Suleiman ‘m’ 34 years, Bitrus Bulus ‘m’ 28 years, Monday John ‘m’ 29 years and Saidu Adamu ‘m’ 30 years. The following exhibits were recovered from the suspects: one locally fabricated pistol, one live cartridge, one Black Kia Rio, one Dark Blue Peugeot 307, Car Keys, one wrist watch, one toy gun, one axe, one fake army identify card, etc.

In addition, following an on-going investigation, detectives from the Command Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) arrested one Peter Emmanuel ‘m’ 25 years who has been on the unit’s watch list for reported cases of armed robbery around Karu and Gwagwalada axis. The suspect was arrested at airport road in possession of a bag containing the following exhibits: two locally fabricated pistols, three live cartridges, five live ammunition and a charm vest. Effort is been intensified to arrest members of his gang who are at large.

Also, on 22nd January, 2020 at about 0400hrs Police operatives while responding to a distress call in Galadimawa arrested one Abdulkarim Zubairu ‘m’ 22 years in possession of one locally made pistol at the robbery scene. Other members of his gang escaped on sighting the police team. Effort is being intensified to arrest other members of the gang who are currently at large.

2. ARREST OF SUSPECT/ RECOVERY OF DRIED LEAVES SUSPECTED TO BE INDIAN HEMP

On 20th February, 2020 at about 1420hrs police detectives from the Command Anti-Narcotic Unit on patrol at Wuse Zone 5 arrested one Ukeme Ewok ‘m’ 22 years in possession of thirty (30) wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Upon his arrest, the suspect confessed that he peddles the drugs. He will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigation.

Similarly, on 11th February, 2020 detectives of the Command Anti-Narcotic Unit recovered four (4) bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from a raid conducted at a blackspot in Deidei tomato market. No suspect arrested in connection with the recovery. Investigation is in progress.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAP/ RESCUE OF VICTIM / ARREST OF SUSPECTS

On 11th February, 2020 Police operatives from Nyanya Division arrested one Gabriel Orinya ‘m’ 20 years who conspired with Vincent Yohanna ‘m’ 20 years and Thomas James ‘m’ 20 years to abduct his 9-years-old nephew, while on his way home from school. The victim was held hostage for some hours at an uncompleted building located at Ruga Mararaba. The arrest was necessitated by an alarm raised by some vigilant persons who sighted the victim crying profusely while in company of the suspects around an isolated bush path. Upon their arrest, the suspects confessed that their intention was to keep the boy hostage until his father part with some ransom in exchange for his release. The principal suspect Gabriel Orinya is a nephew to the victim; before his arrest, he was living in the same house with the victim’s parent and was saddled with task of taking the victim to school and bringing him home. The suspects will be arraign in court upon the conclusion of investigation.

3. ARREST OF CAR THIEVES/ RECOVERY OF STOLEN CAR

On 11th February, 2020 Police operatives from the Anti-Car Theft Unit arrested one Nasiru Saleh ‘m’ 24 years and Sadiq Mohammed ‘m’ 17 years, who conspired with others now at large to steal a red Toyota corolla from a compound at Shagari Quarters Deidei on 5/12/2019. The suspects were arrested after the police received information that the stolen car has been taken for registration by the new buyer. The information led to the recovery of the car and arrest of the two principal suspects. Efforts is being intensified to arrest the other suspects who are now at large.

Similarly, on 15th February, 2020 Police operatives arrested one Abdulfatai Agbolade ‘m’ 56 years at Bwari in possession of a Toyota Corolla with reg. no. BDG 350 CE, which was earlier reported to have been stolen from Wuse market where it was parked. Investigation is ongoing.

Relatedly, on 22 February, 2020 at about 1830hrs Police operatives from Wuse Division acting on tip off arrested one Nasiru Adamu Galadima ‘m’, while trying to steal an ash coloured Honda Civic with registration number YLA 437 AE from where it was parked at Wuse market. Investigation is ongoing.

In another development, on 24th February, 2020 at about 0630hrs Police operatives from Wuse Division following a distress call arrested one Chidera Agoha ‘m’ at Accra street Wuse Zone 5 while trying to snatch a Toyota Camry with registration Number EP 969 EKY, after stabbing the driver with a Knife on the chest. The car has been recovered. The victim was rushed to a hospital where he was treated and discharged.Investigation is ongoing.

Furthermore, on 14th February, 2020 Police operatives from Kubwa Division investigating a reported case of car theft arrested one Chinedu Victor ‘m’ around Movda Lounge Kubwa in Possession of the Toyota Camry with registration number BEN 292 BB that was stolen on 7/2/2020. The exhibits recovered from the suspect are: one Toyota Camry with registration number BEN 292 BB, one Itel phone and a box containing electrical tools. Investigation is ongoing.

On 25th February, 2020 Police operatives from the Command Anti Car Theft Unit arrested one Mustapha Abdulhamid ‘m’ 24 years at Gudu following a compliant that he sold two cars that were placed in his care for Uber services. Before selling the cars, the suspect changed the particulars of the cars into his name. The two cars, golden colour Toyota corolla reg. no. AKD 39 EH and Blue colour Toyota corolla with reg. no. YAB 457 BL, have been recovered as exhibit. Investigation is ongoing.

On 14th February, 2020 Police operatives from the Command Anti Car Theft Unit arrested one Isa Abdulhamid Isiere ‘m’ 27 years and Suleiman Yunus ‘m’ 35 years following a complaint that the duo conspired and sold a company car left in their care. The blue colour Peugeot car with reg. no. GRU 42 RZ was recovered from Kano where the suspects sold it. Investigation is ongoing.

ARREST OF CULTISTS/ RECOVERY OF EXHIBITS

Following a special operation carried out by operatives of the Command Criminal Investigation Department to curb the menace of cultism in some communities in FCT, thirteen suspected cult members terrorising jabi Daki-biu, Karimo, Gwagwa, Utako, Jahi and Mpape were recently arrested at their hideouts. The suspects arrested are: Aba Benedict ‘m’, Ismail Jaafaru ‘m’, Patrick Oduga ‘m’ , Chimeze Eze ‘m’, Uchechi Eke ‘f’, Elkana David ‘m’, Promise Ezebuike ‘m’, Ubom Isaac ‘m’, Chukwuemeka Ndukwe ‘m’, Chikamso Anozie ‘m’, Samuel Chinasa ‘f’, Victor Godwin ‘m’ and Jibrin Ismaila ‘m’. Exhibits recovered from them are: two (2) locally fabricated pistols, four cutlasses, caps, wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, etc. Suspect belong to Vikings and Black Axe confraternity. The suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigation.

On 30th January, 2020 acting on a compliant, Police detectives from the Command Anti-Vice Unit arrested one Emmanuel Pius ‘m’ 42 years for impersonation. The suspect hides under the pretense of being an aid to some influential government officials to defraud his unsuspecting victims, who are mostly job and contract seekers. He will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigation.
