COVID-19 Amnesty: Edo, Katsina, Rivers Release 661 Prison Inmates

COVID-19: Edo Gov Grant’s Amnesty to 173 Prison Inmates

In line with the declaration of the Federal Government on the release of inmates to decongest Correctional Centres to create room for social distancing, the Governor of Edo State His Excellency Godwin Obaseki granted pardon and releases 173 inmates.

The released inmates cut across the various Medium Security Custodial Centres of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Edo State Command as follows:
OKO: 48
Benin Old: 108
Auchi: 4
Ubiaja: 12
And Female Facility Auchi: 1

The state government also provided relief items to each of the released inmates.

Addressing inmates of MSCC Benin to flag off the release, Controller of Corrections Edo State Command Joseph Usendiah said: “the best way to appreciate this special favours of the government is to promise and ensure that none of you is found wanting again.” That they should all be law abiding and put into use all the training and skills acquire while in custody.

Controller Usendiah also gave words of advice to those still in custody that “pardon comes from God therefore patience, commitment to learning and reformation should be the watch word.” He also encouraged them to be hopeful in God.

The overjoyed released inmates expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government, Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Controller General of Corrections Ja’afaru Ahmed for their release, promised to be good citizens and that they will not be found wanting again.

Covid 19: Katsina CJ Releases 401 on Bail, Discharge 25 Inmates

The Chief Judge of Katsina State, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar, has released 25 inmates and granted bail to 401 others in the various custodial centers in Katsina state.

The Chief Justice advised those who regained their freedom and those granted bail to be of good character.

The CJ was conducted round the facilities by the Controller of Corrections, Muhammad Abdulmumin Haruna, and addressed inmates in their various cells.

While speaking with journalists, the Controller applauded the effort of the Chief Judge and appealed to those whose loved ones are in custody to bear with the decision to suspend prison visit as a result of precautionary measures taken against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic; aimed at protecting the health and safety of staff and inmates.

COVID – 19: Rivers CJ Pardons 62 Prison Inmates

As part of measures to decongest the correctional facilities across the country to curb the spread of the corona virus pandemic, Rivers State Chief Judge Justice Iyayi Adama Laminkara has released 62 Inmates including 1 Female, with minor offences from Degema, Ahoada and Port Harcourt Maximum Security Custodial Centres in the state.

While addressing the released inmates, Justice Laminkara stated that they should go home, stay safe and stay away from crime.

The beneficiaries were also given cash tokens for transportation to their various destinations.

The Controller of Corrections, Olumide Tinuoye appreciated the Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Chief Judge and her team for decongesting the Custodial Centres and for the token given to the beneficiaries to transport themselves to their various homes.

He also mentioned that the Governor had this month granted unconditional pardon of two long term convicts serving life imprisonment in the state.

The Controller later handed a copy of the Nigerian Correctional Act 2019 to the Chief Judge and as well introduced the officer in charge non Custodial in the state. He urged the judiciary to consider the use of non Custodial measures for minor offences now that the Nigerian Correctional Service is willing and ready with men and means to fully enforce community sentencing.

Earlier in the week, 5 inmates serving federal Offences were released from the various Custodial Centres.
