ahmed-idrisThe Federal government of Nigeria has called on all the Professional Accountants in Nigeria to be prudent, transparent and accountable in managing public resources by removing corrupt practices in the system.

This call was made at the occasion of the opening ceremony of the 21st Annual conference of Certified National Accountants, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on 4th October 2016 by the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed ldris, FCNA  who represented the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria  President Mohammudu Buhari GCFR at the Conference. The theme of this year’s  conference is, “NIGERIA’s ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT: ACCOUNTANTS’ PERSPECTIVE”.

Mr. Idris, during the representational assignment noted that government will rely heavily on the input of the Professional bodies like ANAN, to address current issues especially in the fight against corruption. He therefore urged the ANAN members to be professionally at the forefront for efficient public finance management so as to engender real economic growth for the benefit of the country.

According to Mr. Idris, ” the fight against corruption is not about retribution and dishing out punishment but about getting back looted funds for the Country’s economic growth.

Speaking further, Mr. Idris reiterated that the TSA Initiative has proved its worth in the blocking of leakages in the system, in reducing cost of borrowing by MDAs and above all improved inflow of revenue to government.

The Accountant General of the Federation also noted that the BVN driven payroll and pension audits are equally  helping in controlling MDAs payroll system as well as assuring  accurate payment to all public servants.

In his keynote address, the President/Chairman of Council of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Mr. Anthony Chukwuemeka Nzom, FCNA, CPA, advised the Federal Government to ensure that recovered funds are effectively redistributed to all sectors of the economy to alleviate economic hardship which the nation is currently facing whilst urging government to dialogue with all aggrieved parties to achieve sustainable peace to further the nation’s economic prosperity.

In his own contribution, the representative of ICAN, Mr. Sylvester Nwanne, stressed the need for cordial relationship between ANAN and ICAN, urging them to provide a good  background for sound professional Accountants and to ensure that Nigeria is bequeathed with transparency and accountability as a great country.
