EFCC Arraigns Land Scammers for Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today July 17 , 2017 arraigned the trio of Nuhu Malam Arung, Peter Audu Kwasau, and Jonah Lika before Justice Tukur Muazu of the Kaduna State High Court on a three count charge of Conspiracy, Obtaining by False Pretence and Issuance of Dud Cheque.

The accused persons allegedly obtained the sum of N3,000,000 (Three Million Naira) from the complainant by fraudulently claiming that they have a parcel of land for sale. It was further alleged that after collecting the money from the complainant, the accused persons issued him with a post-dated cheque which was returned unpaid on presentation due to lack of funds in the account.

After listening to the charge read to them, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution counsel Nasiru Salele requested a date for trial in view of the plea of the accused persons. However, counsel representing the accused persons, J.S Ango moved a bail application praying the court to admit his clients to bail.

Salele called the attention of the court to the fact that the bail application lacks competency because the provisions of section 119 and 115 of the Evidence Act had not been complied with.

Justice Muazu agreed with Salele and subsequently stroke out the accused bail application.

The matter has been adjourned to November 2, 2017 for the commencement of trial while the accused persons are to remain in prison custody pending proper application for their bail.
