Now, the BAT can fly… By Abdullahi O. Haruna Haruspice
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a man with a long-standing aspiration to lead Nigeria, has finally been given the opportunity to steer the affairs of this great nation. While many Nigerians have sought greener pastures abroad, Tinubu chose to return to his motherland to pursue his dreams. His decision was driven by a strong sense of patriotism, and he immersed himself in the school of governance, beginning as a senator of the Federal Republic in the botched republic of 1991.
Navigating through the era of military dictatorship, Tinubu survived to become the governor of Lagos state in 1999. This was the period when he began to establish himself as a leader, learning the intricacies of governance, building a formidable team, and designing an appropriate blueprint for governance. Tinubu is now ready to take on the task of leading Nigeria, and his extensive experience and deep understanding of Nigerian realities have prepared him sufficiently for the job.

To hit the ground running, Tinubu must replicate the Lagos template at the national level, where the best individuals, regardless of their ethnicity, are chosen to form a critical part of his governance. This mindset must be replicated at the national level, demonstrating the nationalism that his votes in the just-concluded presidential elections posited. Tinubu was not just the choice of the South West, but of all Nigerians, having been overwhelmingly voted in without any region having the bragging right of producing him.
As president, Tinubu can leverage his experience as a successful businessman and governor to build a strong and inclusive economy that creates jobs and lifts people out of poverty. He can achieve this by promoting policies that encourage local and foreign investments, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and increasing government spending on infrastructure projects, education, and healthcare. Tinubu can also focus on empowering small and medium-sized businesses, which are the engines of growth in any economy, through access to credit, technology, and markets.
Corruption and insecurity are two of Nigeria’s most pressing problems, and Tinubu can address them by implementing policies that promote transparency, accountability, and rule of law. He can strengthen anti-corruption agencies.
Tinubu’s success as a leader will hinge on his ability to translate his experience in Lagos to the national level, using the blueprint he has designed to tackle Nigeria’s challenges. His leadership will be critical to the development of Nigeria, and he must be resolute in his commitment to making Nigeria work again. With his experience, determination, and patriotic zeal, Tinubu is poised to fly on the wings of success, and we can only wish him the best as he takes on this critical task.
Now that the BAT is winged, he can fly …
