NOWA and Aisha Gambo’s Vision for Naval Officers’ Wives

In an era of modern warfare and maritime defense, the Nigerian Navy is increasingly embracing their roles beyond traditional security operations. Amidst their core mission of safeguarding national waters, many naval forces have extended their reach to become instrumental in welfare-related projects and charitable ventures.
This paradigm shift is reflective of a broader commitment to societal well-being and a recognition that their impact can go beyond the high seas.
The impact which is to complement the efforts of the Nigerian Navy in welfare-related projects in charitable ventures through their spouses.
The Naval Officers Wives Association (NOWA) is a forum to provide service to humanity, as well as a platform for solving social and societal problems. NOWA has so far provided opportunity for social interaction that facilitated the promotion of love, harmony and cooperation among naval officers’ wives and their families.
NOWA, under indefatigable Hajiya Nana Aisha Gambo, has continued to achieve remarkable milestones, aiming to transform the lives of its members and society at large.
However, in line with established tradition and the need to build on the successes recorded in more than five decades of the existence of the association was the extraordinary display of commitment to social development and community empowerment.
The association has consistently prioritized initiatives that address critical societal needs. Their unwavering dedication has not only resulted in tangible projects but also inspired a spirit of collaboration and unity among naval officers’ wives, fostering a sense of purpose and empowerment.
Through various programs and initiatives, NOWA has positively impacted the lives of its members and extended a helping hand to communities in need.
Beyond the construction projects, Mrs Gambo through NOWA, has also made significant strides in the areas of education, healthcare, and skill acquisition. The association has consistently organized seminars, workshops, and training programs to equip its members with valuable skills and knowledge, enabling them to become self-reliant and independent. These efforts, undoubtedly have contributed to the personal and professional growth of naval officers’ wives, enabling them to thrive in their respective fields.
NOWA’s commitment to social responsibility extends beyond its own members. The association has been actively engaged in philanthropic activities, reaching out to underprivileged communities and providing them with essential support. Through medical missions, donation drives, and welfare programs, NOWA has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the less fortunate, thereby leaving an indelible mark on society.

Recently, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association Events Centre in Abuja symbolizes a new chapter in NOWA’s journey of empowerment and community development. The association’s vision of providing a world-class facility for members and beyond for promoting social cohesion will become a reality. This endeavor, coupled with their previous achievements such as the NOWA International Market, in Rivers state underscores the association’s commitment to sustainable development and their unwavering dedication to uplifting communities across Nigeria.
On the same development, Mrs. Gambo just like her husband, who has championed a genuine concern for the welfare and well-being of naval personnel. Gambo in her effort of effective leadership and the power of community-driven initiatives also commissioned NOWA Shopping Complex in Navy Barracks Kuje.
In her speech, she noted that commerce has been critical because it helps to satisfy the wants and needs of people and create jobs towards enhanced living standard.
“It is in view of this that governments and private sectors strive to create standard shopping malls and complexes to enhance commerce for sustainable economic growth. This underscores the idea for construction of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association Shopping Complex, Kuje.”
Similarly, the association has consistently organized social welfare activities, including recreational events, cultural celebrations, and family support programs. These initiatives have not only fostered a sense of community among naval families but also provided them with a much-needed respite from the demanding and often challenging nature of naval service.
In a commendable display of visionary leadership and unwavering commitment, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, extends heartfelt appreciation to the President, Hajia Nana Gambo, and her dedicated team. Their tireless efforts in addressing the welfare needs of naval personnel and their families have not gone unnoticed, earning them well-deserved recognition.
He identified one of the landmark projects of the organisation as the ongoing 200-bed Women and Children Green Smart Hospital that NOWA commenced construction in June 2022.
The CNS said, “Again, today we are here on 1.9 hectares of land to initiate the construction of NOWA event center at the Admiralty Estate, Asokoro.
“Aside the remarkable sense of foresight in identifying and supporting the welfare initiatives essential for the well-being of naval personnel, Mrs. Gambo has recognize that a strong and cohesive naval force relies not only on its members but also on the support and resilience of their families, NOWA has been instrumental in enhancing the lives of the naval community.”
The Naval boss acknowledges the indispensable role played by NOWA in fostering a sense of camaraderie and unity among naval families. The association has diligently worked towards providing a nurturing environment where families can thrive while their loved ones serve the nation at sea. This has had a positive impact on the morale and operational effectiveness of naval personnel.
