Matawalle’s Clarion Call on Increased Military Operations – Apt
By Mukhtar Ya’u Madobi
The recent complaints by the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Matawalle, regarding the incessant rise in banditry and terrorism in Northwestern Nigeria especially in Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, and other states have cast a spotlight on the urgent need for a more robust response from the Nigerian military.
As a result, the Minister urged the Nigerian Military to adopt a more proactive approach to decimating the activities of bandits and dealing with insecurity in the aforementioned states.
He further emphasised the need for synergy amongst the services to be able to wipe out insurgency and other forms of criminality in the region
Nigeria has been grappling with insecurity for years, particularly in the Northwestern region where banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling is more pronounced as well as the Northeastern part that has been facing challenges from the activities of insurgents.
The activities of bandits and terrorists have inflicted tremendous hardship on Nigerians as the scope of their threats combine to create a climate of fear and instability. The economic impact is significant, as agriculture and trade are severely hampered.
Matawalle’s concerns are a clarion call for a more decisive military response. The minister reiterated the urgency of these operations, stating that “the safety and well-being of our citizens remain paramount, and it is imperative that decisive action be taken to curb the menace of terrorism and banditry in our communities.”
As he posited, stronger military presence can deter banditry and terrorist attacks. Proactive operations can disrupt their activities, seize weapons, and dismantle their networks.
No doubt, increased security measures are essential to safeguard civilians, especially those in remote areas, from kidnappings and attacks. Successes against these groups can bolster public trust in the government’s ability to ensure safety and security thereby restoring public confidence.

While the need for increased operations is clear, however, there are challenges to consider especially with regards to the issue of manpower and resources. The Nigerian military is vast, but it faces strain on multiple fronts. Careful planning and resource allocation are crucial.
But it is good to note that military action alone cannot solve the problem. Addressing underlying issues like poverty, lack of opportunity, and radicalization efforts is vital for long-term stability. Therefore, a multi-pronged approach is necessary to achieve lasting security.
Just as suggested by Matwalle, surge in military operations including targeted offensives, intelligence gathering, and improved coordination between the military and other security agencies are vital to achieving these feats.
From the side of the government, investment in social programs through vocational training and empowerment is of paramount importance. Addressing poverty and lack of opportunity can help stem the tide of radicalization and recruitment by bandits and terrorists.
Also, there is a need for more concerted efforts in terms of community engagement: Building trust and cooperation with local communities is vital for gathering intelligence and gaining support for counter-insurgency efforts.
It is against this background that the minister called for cooperation from all stakeholders, urging communities to support security agencies in their efforts to rid the region of criminal elements
Meanwhile, enhanced security in Nigeria will not only safeguard the lives and properties of our people but also improve the quality of farming, irrigation and other socio-economic activities capable of boosting the country’s economy.
“Farmers will be able to cultivate their lands without fear of attacks, thus ensuring food security and economic prosperity for the region.” Matawalle added.
All in all, the Nigerian people deserve to live in peace and security. Increased military operations, coupled with investment in social programs and community engagement, are essential to defeat the threats posed by bandits and terrorists.
The time for decisive action is now. By working together, the Nigerian government, military, and citizens can build a safer and more prosperous future for all.
